At the beginning of the 20th century, Edward Ehrbar found himself very much in the same entrepreneurial mindset as other greats of the time. Men like the Wright Brothers and Henry Ford had inspired him to set out and found his own company. The “Machine Age” was upon the country, and Ehrbar saw the possibilities of the age like few others.
Ehrbar left behind his successful farm business in Ohio to travel to New York as the 20th century dawned. In 1903 he started Edward Ehrbar, Inc. and immediately set to work serving as time keeper during the construction of New York City’s Queensborough Bridge.
During the Roaring 20’s Edward’s three sons - Edward Jr., Chester and Joseph – were brought into the business. The three boys helped in any way they could by sharpening tools and making deliveries on behalf of the company.
After the passing of Edward Ehrbar Sr. in 1927, the company was led by Edward Jr. The younger Erhbar used everything his father had taught him to weather the Great Depression.
World War II brought with it extra opportunities for the company and Erhbar Jr. was appointed chief of the War Production Board’s construction machinery section in 1942. When he went to serve as a commander overseas for two years, Edward’s brother Chester took the helm of the company.
At the end of the 50’s. Edward Ehrbar Jr. moved the location of the company from Brooklyn to Pelham Manor, NY.
In 1969 the company lost its leader when Edward Ehrbar Jr. passed away. It was then that Jerry Ahern was selected to lead the company. Fully taking part in the family tradition of the company, Ahern brought his own three sons – Matthew, Patrick and Edward into the business. Their contributions were many as the company entered the 21st century.
Today, Ehrbar has a century of service to the construction industry. Throughout the decades, the company has delivered on its promise to serve the customer well. As it looks to the future, it holds up its past accomplishments proudly.
